Upgrading Your Outdoor Space for Summer 2021

The warmer months are finally approaching and the only thing left to do before enjoying those long days and warm evenings is preparing your outdoor space. Our gardens can suffer a tough time of it during English winters and there is often some work to do to get our outdoors ship shape and ready to enjoy. As we start planning for a (hopefully) long, hot summer, we have compiled our top outdoor design upgrades for 2021…

Create an outdoor living area

If you, like us, enjoy getting outdoors whilst the weather permits, why not set up a proper living space? Comfortable seating, outdoor soft furnishings, decorative lighting and waterproof garden rugs can create an affordable yet luxurious space to relax and enjoy in the nice weather.

Increase the usable space

Too often we fail to optimise our outdoor areas! No matter how big or small your outdoor space, approach it as you would any other ‘room’ and think about what you would most use the space for. If you would like to entertain, why not build or increase the size of an existing patio. If you have large flower beds or lots of bushes taking over and need more space for the kids to play, reduce or get rid of them!

Set it up for after dark

Setting up lighting and a heating source is a worthwhile investment when you consider the extra hours you will get out of your outdoor space! There is a wide variety of super-convenient solar lighting available (no electricity supply needed, and they turn themselves on!) to suit any outdoor design, and a patio heater or chiminea will ensure you can enjoy your time outdoors well into the evening without getting chilly.

Install a pergola

Weather-proof your outdoor space and make a statement with an on-trend pergola. We all know the British weather is prone to more than a few Spring and Summer showers, but that needn’t spoil our time outdoors. Wrap with greenery, flowers and lights for a stunning finish.

For an excellent budget-friendly alternative install an awning to provide shade and shelter.

Homemade outdoor furnishings

Another budget-friendly hack, pallet furniture is just one of the trends that has taken Pinterest by storm over recent years. Outdoor dining sets and fashionable rattan can be expensive, but DIYers have shown us that beautiful furniture can be created for a fraction of the cost and be totally on trend.

Add a fire pit

Fire pits have been a huge trend in recent years; if you are looking to invest in a really sociable space that is both visually striking and practical for cooler nights fire pits are the perfect solution to provide a focal point for your outdoor design.

Upgrade your single-storey extension to include a balcony terrace

The ultimate single-storey extension upgrade? Don’t waste an inch of space- turn the roof of your extension into a balcony or terrace to introduce an extra living space. The perfect place to relax on a nice dining set whilst keeping an eye on the kids below!

Install a summer house

Whether you use it as a playroom, garden bar or just somewhere to shelter when the heavens inevitably open, summer houses can be an affordable solution to create more ‘usable space’.

Invest in an outdoor kitchen

Absolute luxury; no more traipsing in and out with food and drinks. If it is feasible within your space and budget an outdoor kitchen creates the ultimate outdoor living space that the whole family, and guests, can enjoy.

If your Spring/Summer 2021 plans involve transforming your home to make the most of your indoor and outdoor space it is time to begin planning! Find out more about the planning and design process here: house-architects.co.uk/getting-your-home-extension-off-the-ground
