K&J first approached us for a free initial consultation to chat about the problems with their existing home layout and how they envisioned their future home working for them.
The issues they faced were primarily caused by a lack of space; their home was no longer meeting their requirements. We first discussed what this lack of space meant in a practical sense and how it restricted them in day to day life.
A small kitchen and no entertaining space, combined with no guest room and only one small bathroom upstairs meant it was difficult to entertain friends and family as they would like or have overnight guests. The lack of utility or downstairs toilet added to the strain of having a small kitchen and sole bathroom. Finally, it wasn’t ideal for their busy dog minding business.
During this initial meeting we discussed what they envisioned for their future home, potential solutions to achieve this and the costs, permissions and timescales involved with various design options. Overall, we agreed an open-plan living space designed with entertaining in mind would work best for their lifestyle, combined with the additions of a utility room with external access (no muddy pawprints through the house!) to the ground floor and a guest bedroom and extended master suite with en-suite and walk in wardrobe to the first floor.
K&J were happy to move forwards to the design stage during which we looked at a number of options and potential layouts. Through a process of mix and match during our live design consultation they settled on a single-storey rear extension and two-storey side extension incorporating a generous open-plan living space as discussed, a large utility room, a guest bedroom, a master suite and an office space.
